In 2024 Things Engraved wanted to showcase the artistic work of Anishinaabe Ojibwe artist Ryan Woodruff. Below, we share his words on what inspired his design for this year's shirt:
Truth and Reconciliation Day Design
This design honors the children lost to the residential school system. It depicts a child’s moccasin being held up by an adult arm, symbolizing both the memory of the children who never returned home and the continued support of survivors and their families.
The inspiration came from the heartbreaking discovery of unmarked graves at residential school sites, and the powerful image of children’s shoes placed on school steps in remembrance. The moccasin represents the innocence of these children, and the arm signifies the strength of the community carrying their memory forward.
On this Truth and Reconciliation Day, may this design serve as a reminder of the ongoing journey towards healing and justice.
